Industry 4.0 is here and it’s revolutionizing the way manufacturers are doing business. BDC surveyed 960 Canadian entrepreneurs to report on their use of digital technologies, the lessons and best practices they’ve learned so far and what advice they have for other manufacturers.

Canadian manufacturers who are investing in digital technologies are seeing dramatic improvements in productivity, growth and customer satisfaction, according to a new BDC study, “Industry 4.0: The New Industrial Revolution“.

The study, based on a survey of 960 Canadian entrepreneurs, shows that:

  • Close to 40% of Canadian small and mid-sized manufacturers have implemented digital technology projects
  • Digital adopters improved productivity by 60% and saved almost 50% in operating costs
  • 42% of digital adopters improved overall product quality

Training Skills Development Report -March31_Final Version

This report describes the findings from the Training and Skills Development survey of 40 businesses from across the West Kootenay region of BC, involved in the metallurgical and advanced manufacturing sectors specifically. These surveys were conducted in the fall and winter of 2016/2017.

This survey research is part of a project that aims to identify regional and sector-specific workforce development training needs in the metallurgical and advanced manufacturing sectors in the rural West Kootenay region of BC. Specifically, this project will identify and begin to address the technical and business skills training gaps relating to new technology and additive manufacturing.

Manufacturing a Competitive Business Environment in Canada

Canadian Manufactures & Exporters (CME) along with its strategic partners, releases Manufacturing a Competitive Business Environment in Canada, the first of five reports that provide detailed analysis and recommendations stemming from CME’s Industrie 2030 initiative aimed at doubling manufacturing output by 2030.

Based on research and consultation through the CME led Industrie 2030 initiative, the business environment in Canada is getting worse. Increases in business taxes, regulatory demands, and energy costs along with reductions in government support programs were among the most cited challenges that are making it more difficult and costly to do business in Canada. Nearly half of all respondents to CME’s survey stated the federal government does not support the growth of the company. That share rises to 60 per cent for provincial governments. And this is reflected directly in the statistics – for every $1 invested by a manufacturer in Canada, $8.65 is invested by an equivalent manufacturer in the United States.

Manufacturers Must Accelerate the Adoption of Advanced Technologies

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) along with its strategic partners, released Accelerating Adoption of Advanced Manufacturing, the second of five reports that provide detailed analysis and recommendations stemming from CME’s Industrie 2030 initiative aimed at doubling manufacturing output by 2030.

Manufacturing Matters:

  • Directly employs 1.7 million Canadians – 10 per cent of entire workforce
  • Directly and indirectly accounts 30 per cent of economic output and 27 per cent of all employment
  • Directly responsible for more than two-thirds of all exports

“For manufacturers to compete globally they must invest in new advanced technologies both in their products and their processes,” stated Mathew Wilson, Senior Vice President at CME. “For the Canadian economy, and the manufacturing sector to prosper, companies must invest in new machinery and equipment, and incorporate new digital technologies and advanced manufacturing capabilities into their operations. However, over the past several years investment has decreased as the sector has struggled with static output and exports.”

Based on research and consultation through the CME led Industrie 2030 initiative, Canadian manufacturers are not investing in advanced technologies. More than 60 per cent all respondents to CME’s survey stated they do not presently use advanced manufacturing technologies in their operations. And this is reflected directly in the statistics – manufacturing investment in machinery and equipment in Canada has fallen by nearly five per cent between 2009 and 2014, hitting a 30-year low in that year. In the US investment has risen by 58 per cent over the same time period. In fact, few industrialized countries have a worse record than Canada.

To accelerate the adoption of advanced manufacturing in Canada, we must:

  • Enhance depreciation rates and provide tax credits to encourage investment in advanced;
  • Establish manufacturing hubs and technology demonstration centres to showcase and test new advanced manufacturing technologies;
  • Expand all regional manufacturing technology investment support programs across the country; and,
  • Reinvest federal and provincial carbon-pricing revenues back into offsetting the cost of purchasing new technologies and machinery and equipment.

“The Fourth Industrial Revolution is rapidly changing the products that manufacturers are creating and how they are being created while reducing operating costs and improving environmental performance,” added Wilson. “Other countries have created national strategies around technology adoption, and it is critical that Canadian governments work closely with industry to help facilitate the adoption of these technologies and to grow our manufacturing sector. Without strong, coordinated actions, our manufacturing sector will continue to be left behind.”

KPMG Manufacturing Report

KPMG International’s Global Manufacturing Outlook (GMO) report shows that manufacturers are painfully aware of the many short-term challenges they face. Increasing competition, volatile energy and input costs, new technologies and supply chain visibility are all creating immediate challenges for organizations that – at the same time – are fighting to prepare for the launch of the ‘next wave’ of innovations.

Key highlights of this year’s KPMG Manufacturing Report include:

  • Manufacturers are increasingly innovation-led and focused on improving R&D efficiency and value. Half of all manufacturers say their strategic focus is innovation-led.Thirty-two percent cite the development of new products and R&D as a top strategic priority.Thirty percent say the biggest challenge for their organization is R&D inefficiency.
  • Sales growth and cost reductions continue to top the agenda as manufacturers prepare for increased competition. Fifty-five percent of respondents cite sales growth as a top priority and 41 percent say they are focused on reducing the cost structure. Almost 40 percent say that their biggest challenge stems from intense competition and pressure on prices.
  • Manufacturers are increasingly looking for breakthrough innovations and are increasing investment into R&D. Forty-one percent of respondents say their primary strategy for innovation is to pursue breakthrough advances. Seventy- four percent of respondents say they will spend upwards of 4 percent of revenues on R&D over the next two years.
  • Manufacturers are entering into partnerships and adopting new technologies in order to improve speed-to-market and lower innovation costs. More than three-quarters of all respondents say that partnerships will form the basis of innovation for their company. Almost half say they are adopting new manufacturing technologies to drive innovation.
  • Reducing costs and preparing for new product launches are high priorities for manufacturing supply chain organizations. Lowering costs and working capital levels is cited by 46 percent as a top supply chain priority. Twenty-nine percent say they will restructure to support growth and 32 percent say they are reconsidering their global footprint based on growth expectations.
  • Concerns about supplier performance and capacity remain high but visibility into supplier organizations remains surprisingly low. Behind the need for greater flexibility, supplier performance and supplier capacity is cited as the second and third biggest supply chain challenges globally. Yet just 14 percent of respondents claim to have complete supplier visibility into Tier 1, 2, and beyond.
